Google expresses happiness that Apple is taking the first step towards adopting the RCS messaging standard. Google had strongly criticized the lack of RCS support on iPhones, as it affected the messaging experience for Android users. Google’s latest campaign in September, titled “Get The Message,” likened iPhone messaging to old pagers.

Google’s statement, as reported on the 9to5Mac website, reads: “Everyone deserves to communicate with each other in modern and secure ways, regardless of the type of phone they have. That’s why we’ve collaborated with the mobile industry to help adopt RCS technology, and we’re pleased that Apple has taken its first step by joining RCS today. We welcome Apple’s collaboration with the GSM Association to transform RCS and enhance security and equality in messaging, and we look forward to working with them to implement this in iOS in a way that suits everyone.”

While Google has announced that it looks forward to collaborating with Apple for a better implementation of RCS on iOS, Apple has not provided detailed specifics on its execution. However, it has mentioned features such as read receipts, sending high-resolution images and videos, improved group chats, and the ability to share location.

Apple has stated its intention to work with GSM Association members to add stronger encryption to RCS. Apple claims that iMessage continues to be the “best and most secure messaging experience for iPhone users.” Nevertheless, RCS support, which will be introduced with an iOS update next year, will adhere to the GSM Association standard.
