An informed official from Japan’s space agency revealed that a group of hackers has infiltrated their systems with the aim of stealing information.

A spokesperson for Japan’s space agency announced on Thursday that the country’s space agency has faced a cyber attack. However, the files accessed by the hackers did not contain crucial information about the country’s missile and satellite operations.

The spokesperson for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) refrained from providing further details about the attack, such as the timing, stating, “There is a possibility of unauthorized access via vulnerabilities in network equipment.” The official added, “After receiving information from one of the external organizations and conducting internal investigations, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency became aware of the possibility of unauthorized access.” The spokesperson avoided disclosing the name of the mentioned organization.

According to Reuters, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson also stated that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Japanese media reported on Thursday that this cyber attack occurred in the summer of this year, and the police notified JAXA of the attack in the fall. The Yomiuri Shimbun was the first media outlet to publish a report on this incident.
