The upcoming MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor is expected to be powerful but may not match the performance of the A17 Pro.

The new MediaTek processor, known as Dimensity 9300, is on the verge of being unveiled and has been spotted in single-core and multi-core Geekbench benchmark tests. The results indicate a significant improvement in performance compared to its predecessors, but it may not compete with the A17 Pro used in the iPhone 15 Pro.

The Dimensity 9300 was tested in an undisclosed model of an Oppo phone with model number PHZ110 and 16 GB of RAM, where the best core operates at a frequency of 3.25 GHz.

The new MediaTek processor achieved scores of 2,139 and 7,110 in single-core and multi-core processing, respectively. The Dimensity 9300 does not include the power-efficient Cortex-A520 core; therefore, the combination of eight medium-power cores, including Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720, arranged in a 1+3+4 cluster, is expected to contribute to the multi-core performance.

Even with the new and unusual configuration, the Dimensity 9300 shows weaker performance compared to the A17 Pro. In the single-core test, the 3-nanometer Apple processor scored approximately 36% higher, and in the multi-core test, it scored about 1.2% higher than the Dimensity 9300.

The multi-core performance of both chips is considered roughly equivalent, but in the single-core test, the Apple A series demonstrated significantly better performance. This highlights the engineering superiority of Apple.

The new MediaTek processor may perform slightly better when integrated into some flagship Android phones in 2024. Since this chip uses four high-power Cortex-X4 cores, its energy consumption is higher, leading to increased processor temperature and, consequently, decreased efficiency. Therefore, a phone equipped with this processor would need a powerful cooling system.

It is currently unclear how the difference between the production cost and the price of the new MediaTek CPU and Qualcomm’s CPU will impact the prices of various smartphones.
